Choose clothing and accessories

Regardless of whether you choose burial or cremation, it is common for the deceased to be dressed in clothes and other accessories. The process of choosing clothing can be therapeutic and provide comfort in that you know the deceased is being laid to rest with style, modesty and dignity. You and the family might choose to purchase new clothing, however that is not necessary. It is perfectly acceptable to use clothing readily available in the deceased’s closet.

What clothing to choose

Many choose to pick a “Sunday best” style of dress, such as a suit and tie for men and a dress for women. But there is no rule here, unless the deceased’s religious beliefs or cultural traditions dictate otherwise. You might consider burying the deceased in a favorite sports jersey if they were an enthusiastic fan. Or clothes that they put on when they wanted to feel comfy and relaxed, even if these are worn and have some stains. If the person served in the military, you can select their uniform. Funeral gowns, which are much like luxury pajamas, also can be purchased. Given that the deceased will be fully dressed, most people include undergarments, socks, and shoes, and whatever else the deceased would have worn in life.

Fit and accessories

While you should do your best to select clothing that fits the person at their size at death, oftentimes clothing in their closet might include sizes from when they weighed more or less. Just use your best judgment and if sizing is off a bit, the funeral home can make needed adjustments. You also should consider carefully if any accessories should be worn. Maybe the deceased had a favorite necklace or hat, or always wore their wedding or college ring. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that family might want to keep these items for their sentimental value and to pass on to the next generations.
