Write a will or review your current will

As executor, you spent a lot of time looking at the will of the decedent. You likely now have a better understanding of what it should and should not include. If you have not written a will for yourself, now is the time. You might even consider using the attorney you used to settle the estate if he or she is in your state of residence. Be sure to incorporate things you found helpful during your service in the executor role.

If you already have a will, read it to see if there is anything you would change now that you’ve been through the process of serving in the executor role. Don’t forget to consider things such as executor compensation, taking inventory of the estate, etc.

You should confirm the validity of your will with an estate attorney. You also should store the will in a safe place and even consider giving a copy to an attorney or trusted family member or friend.
