Share service details

When someone dies, there is usually a collection of people who will want to know funeral details so that they can attend. An obituary published in local newspapers and their online sites can convey details to many at once. However, an obituary will not be seen by all.  As executor or executrix, you might want to contact the deceased’s place of work, neighbors, people in groups or organizations in which they were involved, etc.

When performing this task you should take a moment to consider who might be the best person to contact. By choosing the correct person, you can save yourself time because that person will be able to contact others on your behalf. For example, if the deceased was still working, you might choose to contact his or her boss or human resources department as opposed to a co-worker. The boss or human resources person likely will have the resources to alert the deceased’s co-workers of funeral plans as a whole rather than a co-worker, who might only notify a few people.

The same goes for neighbors. Perhaps one neighbor is familiar with everyone in the neighborhood and can spread the details for you. Another option is to type up details and distribute them to neighbors. This can be faster than calling each on the phone – if you can even locate phone numbers – and ensures you won’t forget to share all the details. Finally, consider using social media, such as Facebook. Today, people of all ages have Facebook accounts. Posting an obituary and funeral arrangements online can help reach many, who then in turn can share the information with others.
