Task 1 of 5

Pay bills at the decedent’s residence

Part of: Determine and Pay Debts of the Estate, Including Taxes

There might be bills left unopened or unpaid at death. It is the responsibility of the executor to ensure these are paid.

Some bills might be for pre-paid services and others might be bills for services already provided. For example, the internet bill might be for the next month’s service but the cell phone bill might be for services in the previous month. When you call to cancel services, be sure to let them know if you have an outstanding bill and find out whether you should pay it. You may need to ask for a “final bill,” up to the date of cancellation.
