Notify landlords

If the deceased rented any property, such as a home or apartment, a piece of land, or even a storage unit, the landlord needs to be notified. It will likely be the case that there is a rental or lease agreement in place. If there is not, proper notification might provide immediate termination of the relationship. This also might mean that the property must be cleaned and left vacant quickly. If there are items that must be removed, you might need to negotiate with the landlord to keep the property until you can do that.

If a rental or lease agreement governs the relationship, it can be helpful to get an attorney to look over the wording to determine what responsibilities you have to vacate the property (including getting all of the decedent’s assets out) and continue to pay the rent.
