Search files in desk drawers for statements
Most people keep files with information about their accounts and investments. An executor should look through the files to help create an accurate list. Keep in mind, though, that the files might not be up-to-date or there may be files still sitting in the drawer for accounts that were closed or investments that were sold off. You should look through each file to determine the status and any further actions you need to take.
As you encounter important files, don’t just put them back in the drawer when you are finished with your first look. You should add these files to your record-keeping system. As statements continue to arrive, put them in the appropriate files the decedent kept. This can save you a lot of time in the long run. Having one filing system instead of two can be helpful if you need to access old information and new. Integrating these files may also help when it comes time to file appropriate taxes.
